What to do in Munich this Summer
It’s that time of year for celebrating Summer in the city! – here’s what to do in Munich this Summer!
In the summertime, when the weather is hot (sometimes), Munich has lots of ways to stay cool and enjoy the summer around town, from parks swims to beer gardens. Here’s what not to miss this summer.
It’s not just Paris that has a sandy beach in the city – Munich has one too – the “Great Bavaria Reef”! With DJs, a fountain to splash around in and plenty of events, get yourself down to the best beach in town. There are a whole host of cultural events until 9th October, check out the programme here
Parks and green space
Known as one of the biggest urban parks, the English Garden (or The Englischer Garten to the locals) is a great place to spend a summer’s day, whether you’re in the beer garden (one of our favourite spots), the shaded woods or watching the surfers on the Eisbach (yes surfers! See more below..). For a great place to picnic try Prater Beach – with sand!
Open Air Cinema
Until September 3rd
This summer enjoy a cinematic experience under the stars! Check out the movie selections at the Olympic Park, Stockyard cinema, Idyllic and Autokino Aschheim for everything from Hollywood blockbusters to art house foreign language movies. Bring a blanket and a picnic! (No glass allowed..)
Check out the listings at the Olympic floating stage here
Check out the surfers on the Eisbach River
You can watch pro surfers catch waves in Munich, right in the centre of town on the Eisbach River. The river flows overground creating a ‘standing wave’ that’s great to surf or even kayak on – right in the English Garden. The best spot for watching is from the bridge where you can see the surfers jump in (and often wiped out). If you can surf then give it a go – but it’s not for first timers as the wave is pretty powerful!
There are also lots of cool rooftop bars around town if you want a view and have some cash to splash – check out these recommendations here.
