BAYERN TICKET one day train travel in Bavaria from 8 EUR / person

The potential for great day trips out of Munich is enormous. If you're using public transport then the 'Bayern Ticket' is tremendous value, especially if travelling with friends/family.

The 'Bayern Ticket' from the Deutsche Bahn enables unlimited travel for 1 day in Bavaria on regional trains plus underground/s-bahn/trams and most local buses.

The 1st person pays 23€, the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th person just 4€ each. (So the price for a day ticket for the whole of Bavaria for 5 people would be just 39 EUR).

There are some restrictions : on a weekday the ticket is only valid after 9am, and generally is only valid on 'regional trains' (ie not ICE, EC, RJ, IC etc). Happily however the regional trains in Bavaria are also top notch, and as distances are not great, will not necessarily take much longer than their big brothers.

If you're making the trip with your own kids (under 15) then they usually travel free.. although is always best to double check..

Salzburg, Austria - 2 hrs train

The birthplace of Mozart is an absolute jewel of a city. The old town is dotted with beautiful squares and churches and is presided over by the magnificent fortress up above, which in it's turn offers spectacular views of the cities and surrounding mountains.

The Getreidegasse puts other cities' shopping streets to shame, the stores may be the same giants you find everywhere... but even these have facades and shopsigns that manage not to spoil the beauty of the old walkway.

The cuisine is not dissimilar to that of Bavaria but there is also more old-world coffeehouse flair to be found alongside the beerhalls. There is also an excellent open air market to discover.

Also well worthy of an overnight stay (if you do then stay at www.yoho.at) if you are in a hurry then you can see alot of Salzburg in one day out from Munich. And even though it's across the border in Austria you can get there with the Bayern Ticket (see above) which makes it a cheap day out too !

Schloss Neuschwanstein + Füssen (the 'Disney' Castle)

Ludwig II may have tried bankrupting Bavaria with his castle building mania but his legacy is undeniable. This is the most famous of the lot, the one Mr Disney based his castle on, and it is simply breathtaking.

There are actually two castles to see here (Hohenschwangau where the young prince spent his youth) plus the charming town of Fuessen, so it's a full day out.

Fuessen is a 2 hour train ride from Munich, leaving every hour. The Bayern Ticket works for this trip. To avoid the queues it's  well worth booking your tickets for the castle in advance online at the busy times of the year.
